In honor of National Literacy Month, the team at the Green Bay Early Childhood Center and NCCP worked together to organize a few initiatives to foster a love of reading, both at school and at home!

The literacy bag contained items such as a sketch book, crayons, watercolors, scissors and glue sticks, as well as a literacy log to encourage parents to read books to their children at home. The reading log will be returned at the end of the month.

We had a total of 26 dads accompany their child to an evening of literacy fun, where they read books and enjoyed donuts and coffee. Following the event, each child receive a bookmark with bullet points for parents about how to lead a picture walk with their kiddos at home. Additionally, every child took home a bag of activities for practicing letters and numbers.

The GBECC set a goal of raising $1,000 through book sales and exceeded that amount, by over $100.  With this money, the GBECC will be able to buy new books for the school, as well as some new and exciting technology for teachers to use with their students in the classroom. Throughout the event, students, parents and teachers also received book prizes.

img_4255Children’s Picture Book Door ContestThe objective of having a literacy door contest was to foster conversation and excitement with students and families around reading. Every teacher chose a children’s picture book to recreate on their door. They were given 3 days to decorate their classroom door, and the competition was on! The doors were judged in 5 categories: Visual Impact, Craftsmanship, Completeness, Originality and Book Theme. Congratulation to Ms. Strus and Ms. Rosi, who won the contest with the book title “Where the Wild Things Are!”
